Peru: Five National Justice Board members sworn in

16:15 | Lima, Jan. 6.

Five of the seven citizens elected to become members of the National Justice Board (JNJ) were sworn in during a ceremony held Monday in the Peruvian capital city of Lima.

The National Justice Board has among its duties to appoint and confirm judges, prosecutors, and heads of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), as well as of the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC).

After taking up duties, the JNJ must remove those who violate their responsibilities —through fair and transparent processes— in order to contribute to the strengthening of the justice administration system and the institutionality of democracy.

The swearing-in was carried out by order of merit. Thus, the first person to assume the JNJ titular member position was former Justice Minister Aldo Vasquez Rios (2015-2016).

He was followed by Jose Avila Herrera, Luz Ines Tello de Ñecco, Imelda Tumialan Pinto, and Antonio Humberto de la Haza Barrantes.

It must be noted Vasquez Rios was later chosen to serve as JNJ Chairman.

The event was led by Special Commission Head and current Ombudsman Walter Gutierrez.

The swearings-in of former Congressman Marco Tulio Falconi Picardo (2011-2016) and former Minister Maria Zavala Valladares (2006-2007) as members of the JNJ were suspended by the special commission in charge of the election process, the media reported.

Questions arose regarding both lawyers in recent days, as they had held phone conversations with dismissed Peruvian Supreme Judge Cesar Hinostroza, but did not inform the special commission about them.

As is known, Hinostroza is considered by the Peruvian Prosecutor's Office a member of The Port's White Collars, a group formed by magistrates of the Judiciary and Public Ministry, whose objective was to control the agencies responsible for administering justice in order to obtain illegal benefits.
