Peru: Fishing sector landings up by almost 50% in Sep 2019

12:29 | Lima, Nov. 2.

Peru's Production Minister Rocio Barrios said on Saturday that fishing sector landings grew 49.6% in September this year to 86,200 metric tons (MT), 28,600 metric tons higher than the same month in 2018.

The direct human consumption segment expanded 49.5%, a result that was influenced by the increase in the landing of resources destined for the frozen (129.8%), fresh (13.1%) and cured (13.1%) markets.

"Increased landings of giant squid, prawns, mackerel, mullet, and scallops stand out from other species. Another important point to note is that the sector has grown for the fourth month in a row," she added.

Responsible fishing

Minister Barrios signed the 10 commitments for responsible fishing and consumption in the country, in the presence of renowned Peruvian chefs, representatives of business associations, as well as the scientific and educational community.

These commitments involve the preservation of species found in seas, rivers and lakes, by protecting them from their possible decrease or extinction and avoiding fishing, transportation, trade, or consumption of juvenile specimens.

Others commitments include respecting temporary and permanent closed seasons for different hydrobiological resources and the fishing ban in reserved areas; as well as avoiding pollution in seas, rivers, lakes and aquatic environments, along with the informal processing of fishing resources in the open.

The minister reiterated the sector's commitment to undertaking actions under A Comer Pescado (Let's Eat Fish) program at the national level.

She said the aim is to offer high quality products at a fair price in compliance with sanitation and sustainability standards.
