Peru: Fishery sector landings up 138% in July 2019

12:44 | Lima, Sep. 2.

Peru's extractive fishing activity expanded 138.4% —in terms of volume— in July 2019 compared to the same month last year, the Production Ministry (Produce) informed Monday.

In this sense, total landings of hydrobiological resources reached 319,300 metric tons (MT), increasing 185,400 MT compared to July 2018 (133,900 MT).

According to Produce, this outcome was underpinned by anchovy catches intended for indirect human consumption (232.6% = 200,100 MT).

In July 2019, there was a higher quota of anchovy destined for the flour industry (11.9%) corresponding to the first fishing season in Peru's central and northern sea areas, while this figure merely stood at 2.2% in the same month last year.

Likewise, landings of species destined for direct human consumption rose 61.6%, amounting to 119,300 MT.

In economic terms, the extractive fishing activity totaled S/269.2 million (around US$79.19 million) in July 2019, a 52.3% expansion compared to the same month last year.

This result was driven by the value increase of resources destined for flour and oil industry (232.6%), as well as the positive outcome of hydrobiological resources intended for canned (152.2%), frozen (40.7%), and fresh (5%) industries.
