Peru: Female artisans in Puno opt for alpaca fiber transformation

The transformation of alpaca fiber has become a sustainable economic development alternative for female artisans who work in the garment manufacturing industry in the Ocuviri district of southern Puno region.

Ocuviri artisans have grouped themselves into 11 organizations, and produce alpaca garments in different styles.


Exhibited at a recent fashion show, the garments are the result of training and technical assistance provided by a high Andean community development center in Ocuviri. 

Craftswomen were trained in machine, hand, and loom weaving before they could implement their workshops with knitting machines, looms, circular machines, winders, and spinning machines, with which they wove colorful alpaca garments.


"Handicraft products are already exportable, this type of garments is exported to the United States and Europe," said Briseida Pauro Pino, regional director of Foreign Trade and Tourism in Puno.

She affirmed textile industry has become a development alternative in Puno and has empowered female entrepreneurs who get better and better in terms of product presentation.
