The father of an Army officer who fights day after day against
terrorist remnants in the Valley of Apurimac, Ene, and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM) was the first COVID-19 patient discharged from the Central Military Hospital in Peru.
The 58-year-old man was admitted to the differentiated triage emergency service of the
Central Military Hospital —located in Lima's Jesus Maria district— last March.
Once there, he underwent rapid and molecular tests, which confirmed the diagnosis of an atypical pneumonia (SARS-CoV).
Despite the risk factors, the timely work of health workers allowed him to evolve favorably after 16 days.
For this reason, doctors decided to decrease the amount of support that the patient received from the mechanical ventilator until he was discharged.
"Speaking from VRAEM, I want to thank all doctors and nurses of the Central Military Hospital for helping my father recover and, therefore, beat COVID-19. Let's stand together to defeat coronavirus," said Lieutenant Juan Mucha, son of the patient.
