Peru: Shining Path terrorist group's remnants in VRAEM resort to desertion

14:15 | Huanta (Ayacucho region), Feb. 21.

A group of Shining Path terrorist group's remnants deserted this terror organization owing to the actions of law enforcement officials, Ministries of Interior and Defense said in a joint statement.

According to the document, seven Shining Path members abandoned their column on January 20, thanks to intelligence operations. So, a joint operation was launched to find and intervene four members of the organization.

These remnants, who were intervened thanks to a military police operation, respond to the alias Wilder, Luciano, Martin, and Mauro.

They all were part of the so-called main driving force that operated under the command of comrade Antonio.

The subjects were captured in a sector of Huanta province (Ayacucho region), in the presence of Ayacucho's counter-terror prosecutor. Afterwards, they were made available to the Public Ministry.

"Their identities will remain confidential until investigations are completed," the statement reads.

The Armed Forces and the National Police continue conducting search operations with the aim of finding and capturing the rest of the remnants.

The detention was possible by virtue of an Armed Forces strategy designed to surround and harass Shining Path remnants in the area. The plan was developed with the help of the police intelligence service.
