| Lima, Oct. 26.
Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Mario Lopez on Monday confirmed that
negotiations with laboratories in the United States, Germany, and China
ensure Peru an important basket of vaccines against COVID-19 for the first quarter of next year.
Within this framework, the high-ranking official indicated that there are eight laboratories with which the South American country has the closest approach —two of which have signed binding agreements with
Pfizer
and the
COVAX Facility
initiative.
"All this leads us to the scenario of
having a large number of doses at the end of the first quarter, in March 2021, which enables us to serve about 30% of the Peruvian population
," he told RPP radio and TV station.
The Cabinet member said that
these doses will contribute to immunizing those on the front line in the fight against COVID-19, such as the police, military members, doctors, as well as teachers
, he noted.
According to the diplomat,
Peru ensured a multiplicity of possibilities to rely on the vaccine in the first quarter of next year
,
since the potential ones are still in Phase 3 of clinical trials
, but there is no fixed date.
"
We have projected that they will be supplied in the first quarter
; we are making progress, and we have a diversity of options," he concluded.
