Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio on Wednesday attended the United Nations' Security Council high-level meeting on the danger North Korea's nuclear program and ballistic missiles represent to international peace and security.

During his speech, the Inca country's representative indicated it is necessary for the Asian country to give up on its nuclear and ballistic program in a complete, verifiable, and irreversible way.

Likewise, he noted the importance of maintaining the Council's unity on this subject, as well as a strict compliance and implementation of the sanctions regime imposed on North Korea by the UN Security Council.

Minister Popolizio went on to add these measures have been successful in bringing the Asian nation to the negotiating table.

With this framework, he hailed the diplomatic efforts undertaken by the governments of South Korea and the United States.

For his part, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo informed about the dialogue process involving his nation and North Korea aimed at achieving denuclearization of the Asian Peninsula.

Concerning President Martin Vizcarra's speech at the UN Security Council —delivered last Wednesday within the framework of the UN General Assembly— Popolizio stressed the importance of multilateralism, international law, and the peaceful settlement of disputes principle in order to counter the threat these weapons represent.

In this sense, the official reaffirmed the Inca country's stance —as a non-permanent Security Council member— to assist in the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

The session was chaired by the United States, in charge of hosting the Council during the month of September. Representatives from the 15 Member-States participated in the meeting.
