Peru FA Min attends OAS General Assembly opening ceremony

10:57 | Medellin (Colombia), Jun. 27.

Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio participated in the opening ceremony of the 49th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) held in the Colombian city of Medellin.

The crisis in Venezuela, the situation in Nicaragua, migration problems, and the human rights situation in countries of the region are some of the topics addressed at the Assembly, OAS Secretary-General Luis Almagro said on Thursday.

During the 49th regular session, the topic of Venezuela will be vital, mainly because it affects the countries receiving migrants.

Other issues to be discussed include the 15th anniversary of the Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia (MAPP-OAS) and the 60th anniversary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

The meeting, being held from June 26 to 28, will also address issues related to private companies, the role of youth, and strengthening of democracy.

This is the third time Colombia hosts the OAS General Assembly, and the second time it takes place in Medellin.

The theme of the 49th General Assembly is "Innovating to Strengthen Hemispheric Multilateralism."
