Peru: Exports continue to recover for third consecutive month

12:07 | Lima, Sep. 7.

Peruvian exports continued to recover in July, for third consecutive month, despite the coronavirus pandemic, the Association of Peruvian Exporters (Adex) reported on Monday.

A slowdown in the decreasing trend was recorded in July this year when foreign sales fell 13.6% from the same period last year.

"The worst fall of 50.6% was seen in April, followed by a 45.1% decline in May and a 30.9% contraction in June," Adex Chairman Erik Fischer informed.

He explained that exporting companies are not operating at full capacity due to health reasons.

"Some are gradually assimilating the higher costs of operating not only in difficult conditions —in terms of logistics and certifications— but at lower productivity levels," he said.

Global demand

According to Fischer, the behavior of the global demand due to the economic recession is a major concern.

"The recovery rate in our principal markets and the joint efforts between public and private sectors —in order to boost value-added shipments— will be determining factors for the future of the sector," he added.
