Peru: Exotic fruit exports up 46.2% to US$13.4 million in 2021

Shipments of Peruvian exotic fruits abroad totaled around US$13.4 million last year, an increase of 46.2% compared to 2020, the Association of Peruvian Exporters' Global Business and Economy Research Center (Cien-Adex) reported on Sunday.

According to the report 'Exotic Fruits: evolution of national and global markets,' the most exported fruit was passion fruit, whose sales (in pulp, frozen and fresh forms) amounted to US$6.742 million, followed by exports of dehydrated, frozen, and canned aguaymanto, which totaled US$3.701 million.

In third place was eggfruit, whose sales (in pulp and frozen forms) amounted to US$1.553 million, while the fourth most exported exotic fruit was custard apple, totaling US$689,000 in exports (in pulp and fresh forms).

Other exported exotic fruits were camu camu, granadilla, aguaje, lulo, cocona, pitahaya and carambola, the association reported.

In 2021, a total of 125 companies exported conventional exotic fruits to 35 nations, and 26 companies shipped organic exotic fruits to 22 territories.

Destination markets

South America was the main destination market, which purchased exotic fruits valued at US$4.3 million (accounting for 31.8% of the total), followed by North America (24%), Europe (21.6%), Central America (10.1%), Oceania (6.8%), Asia (5.5%) and Africa (0.01%).

As per countries, the largest export market for Peruvian exotic fruits was Chile, which purchased fruits valued at US$3.8 million, followed by the United States (US$2.4 million), and Puerto Rico (US$1 million).

Lima accounted for 70.5% of total exports of these fruits, Lambayeque for 9.9%, Ancash for 9.5%, and Junin for 4.3%, among other regions.

Meanwhile, Callao and Ucayali saw the highest increases, 285.6% and 204%, respectively, compared to 2020.
