Peru economy may have grown over 5% in May 2018

14:49 | Lima, Jul. 4.

Peruvian economy may have expanded above 5% in May 2018, Central Reserve Bank (BCR) Governor Julio Velarde projected Wednesday.

"In May, the (national GDP) growth rate must have been higher than 5%, which is positive," the official said.

Likewise, the BCR head pointed out Peru's GDP may have expanded 4.5% in the first five months of the current year.

In this sense, Velarde explained the country's 2018 economic growth will depend on the dynamism of public investment, as well as on how private investment responds.

It must be noted the BCR —last June— maintained its 2018 forecast at 4%.

"There are several mining projects, and we expect to formally announce the most important one, which is Quellaveco (…), so we are very optimistic about these growth figures," he remarked.

Velarde delivered remarks after presenting the silver coin commemorating the 100th anniversary of the National Superior Autonomous School of Fine Arts (ENSABAP).
