Peru's President Ollanta Humala has enacted a law that creates the National Service of Environmental Certification (Senace) which is aimed at assessing and approving environmental impacts.
Senace seeks to assess and approve environmental impact studies for private and public investment in the country.

After enacting the law, the president stressed that the creation of this organization, passed by the Peruvian Parliament on November 22, is a “historical change" as the government takes the lead in environmental issues.

Humala added that the purpose is to find a balance between environmental care and investment.

He stated that this initiative is intended to ensure the welfare of Peruvians, but with sustainable development, as it makes no sense to be a leading producer of minerals if this leads to destroy the country's ecosystem.
