Peru: Covid-19 rapid tests useful for screening in markets, prisons and society in general

18:07 | Lima, May. 25.

Peru's Health Minister Victor Zamora affirmed on Monday that rapid diagnostic tests are complementary and useful for screening in markets, prisons, and the population in general.

"Although the most reliable test is the molecular one, we require technology to process it, as well as the testing supplies, which are limited in the market," the minister stated.

"Prospective data from our working group, sister institutions, and allied researchers independently concluded that a plateau has been reached," he noted.

"In addition, the information has been shared for specialists to carry out their own research," the government official added.

The Cabinet member explained that the oxygen-producing plant installed in the rainforest city of Iquitos requires transitioning capacity from industrial to medical oxygen production, but this will take time.

Additionally, he noted that private sector aid is being taken to Loreto region and will be distributed to other parts of the country.

Initially set to last from March 16 to 30, the social isolation measure has been extended until June 30.

On this occasion, President Martin Vizcarra was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Monday marks the seventy-first day of mandatory social isolation.
