Peru: Coronavirus contagion curve expected to fall this week

09:52 | Lima, May. 11.

The slowdown in the COVID-19 contagion curve will begin this week, said Dr. Elmer Huerta, a specialist in public health, who noted that —according to a study by Mexican and Peruvian scientists— contagion has reached a plateau.

"Peru has reached the plateau, we are slowing down and will see a decrease this week," he noted, referring to a scientific article that applies a well-known mathematical method and that will be published in the coming days.

"We are in the middle of the plateau and (…) the Peruvian one is completely different from those of other countries. So, if we compare it with the plateau that goes up and down, we may not see it, because Peruvian figures are completely atypical and different," the doctor said in statements to Cuarto Poder TV show.

In this sense, he stressed the need to carry on with the quarantine decreed by authorities, as well as with social distancing and daily rituals such as hand washing.

Dr. Huerta noted that the population should be dedicated to overcome this pandemic caused by the coronavirus.
