Peru: Congress urges President Merino to resign

12:16 | Lima, Nov. 15.

Parliament's Board of Spokespersons on Sunday morning urged Manuel Merino de Lama to submit his resignation from the Presidency of the Republic.

In his speech, the Congress Chairman warned that in case Merino fails to resign, Parliament would table a censure motion.

According to Valdez, the spokespersons set 6 p.m. as the deadline for Merino's resignation.

"The Board of Spokespersons agreed to urge President Manuel Merino de Lama to immediately submit his letter of resignation from the Presidency of the Republic, with the sole purpose of safeguarding the life, health, and integrity of all Peruvians," Valdez told the press.

He noted that the decision reflected the dissatisfaction and rejection that Merino's administration has received from the vast majority of Peruvians.

"We recognized Manuel Merino's high democratic and transparent values during his time in Congress, but today the political parties and lawmakers have the difficult decision to urge him to submit his resignation because we value and —above all— put the life of Peruvians ahead of any interest," he claimed.

Otherwise, he added, Congress will table a censure motion against the President and will decide how to proceed with the constitutional succession.
