Peruvian lawmakers on Monday night rejected a second presidential impeachment motion presented by a group of opposition parliamentarians.

55 legislators voted in favor, 54 against, while 19 abstained. Consequently, the motion was shelved, according to Congress Chairwoman Maria Carmen Alva.

The vote came after five hours of debate in Parliament.

According to the Constitution, the presidential impeachment motion required 87 votes in favor (two-thirds) out of 130 in order to succeed.

Earlier on Monday, the President of the Republic Pedro Castillo joined a Parliament plenary session to respond to said motion.

In his speech, the Head of State asked lawmakers to vote for democracy and against instability, noting that said motion lacked supporting evidence.

Afterwards, he traveled to Puerto Bermudez in Pasco region, where he called for putting confrontation aside and for combating a common enemy such as inequality, poverty, and indifference.
