Peru: Congress plenary to elect chairman Wednesday to assume Presidency of the Republic

The Congress plenary will elect on Wednesday, February 18, the new Legislative Branch chairman, who will assume the Presidency of the Republic after the post was left vacant following the approval of censure motions against Jose Jeri.

The plenary session was convened for 6:00 p.m. by Congress' Acting Chairman Fernando Rospigliosi.

"Following the approval of the censure motions against Jose Jeri, the Congress Board declared the Office of Chairman of Congress vacant; consequently, the Office of President of the Republic of Peru is now vacant," Rospigliosi stated.

"Under this extraordinary call, the procedure set out in the final paragraph of Article 12 of Congress' Regulations will be applied. Accordingly, the Board informs that the election of Congress' chairman will take place at the plenary session on Wednesday, February 18, at 6:00 p.m.," he indicated.

Slates for Parliament's chairmanship

To that end, Rospigliosi urged lawmakers to submit their proposed candidate lists to the Senior Clerk's Office, noting that the deadline expires today, Tuesday, February 17, at 6:00 p.m. (local time).

He specified that, in accordance with Congress' Regulations, candidate proposals must be submitted with the endorsement of an authorized spokesperson from one or more duly recognized parliamentary groups.
