Peru Congress opens first session of 2018-2019 legislative year

12:18 | Lima, Jul. 27.

Newly-elected Congress Chairman Daniel Salaverry opened the first regular session of his 2018-2019 term in office. The opening came after the Congress Board's establishment.

As stipulated under article 11 of the Congress Regulations, the Chairman launched the annual session period and called lawmakers into a solemn session on July 28 (Peru's Independence Day).

Salaverry was joined by lawmakers Leyla Chihuan (First Vice-Chairwoman), Segundo Tapia (Second Vice-Chairman), and Yeni Vilcatoma (Third Vice-Chairwoman).

All Congress Board members are part of Fuerza Popular —the party led by Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori.

The group was elected by 69 legislators, whereas other 56 lawmakers voted for the challenging —and multiparty— list led by Victor Andres Garcia-Belaunde (AP).
