Parliament on Thursday evening approved an authorization requested by the Executive Branch for the
President of the Republic Dina Boluarte to travel to Brazil from August 7-9 to participate in the Fourth Presidential Meeting of the States Parties to the Amazon Cooperation Treaty.
On this occasion, legislators cast 62 votes in favor of the authorization, 32 against it, and 7 abstentions.
The debate was characterized by its breadth and the arguments in favor, tending to highlight the need for Peru to have a presence in Amazon and climate change issues, as well as by the stances against the initiative, which even questioned the constitutionality of the proposed presidential trip.
Remote management of Presidential Office
According to Law No. 31810, which modified the Executive Branch Organic Law, the Head of State is allowed to travel abroad and remain in charge of the Presidential Office from outside the country —with previous authorization from Parliament.
Thus, the Prime Minister —in his capacity as authorized spokesperson for the Government— must maintain permanent communication with the Head of State digitally throughout the presidential trip.
Likewise, it specified that this measure can be implemented if the president does not have any acting vice-presidents, as at present.
