Peru: Congress approves Public Sector Budget Bill for FY 2021

During a plenary session on Sunday night, Congress approved the Public Sector Budget Bill for the 2021 Fiscal Year, which exceeds S/183.029 billion (over US$50.68 billion).

The measure was passed with 104 votes in favor, 13 against, and 8 abstentions. 

On the occasion, Parliament also approved the Bill on Financial Balance and Public Sector Debt for the same fiscal year.

The budget bill did not require a second voting session, in accordance with of Article 78 of the National Parliament Regulations.

Within this framework, Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez agreed with the replacement text reached, and thanked the efforts undertaken by Congress members for the outcome emerged from dialogue and consensus.

Bermudez expressed appreciation because all citizens' demands and needs have been clearly identified. Thus, "the lessons learned in these days of debate demand that Peru must have a decentralized budget."

The great conclusion is that "we need a budget which reflects the needs of the entire country, a sentiment that is also expressed by the Executive Branch."

"This budget prioritizes strategic sectors," she noted.


"The great challenge is to access the Bicentennial (in 2021) with a responsible economic management, and (from there) it is necessary to lay the foundations to structure a budget that reflects the great challenges of inclusion and decentralized management," she concluded.
