Peru committed to making oceans a sustainable development opportunity

10:44 | Madrid (Spain), Dec. 10.

Peru's Environment Minister Fabiola Muñoz signed the Pacific Coast Climate Action Alliance within the framework of the 25th UN Climate Change Conference (COP25) held in the Spanish capital city of Madrid.

According to the Ministry of Environment (Minam), the initiative —promoted by Fiji, Costa Rica, Panama, as well as the U.S. State of California— is aimed at enhancing the ambition of countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increasing ocean-based mitigations measures.

Thus, Peru joins this commitment to make oceans an opportunity for sustainable development.

In this regard, Minam explained that Peru's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) include 18 fishing and aquaculture measures linked to adaptation.

In particular, these measures involve the strengthening of early warning systems for early response to extreme weather events associated with climate change.

Muñoz stressed that the initiative will increase the ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by maximizing sustainable ocean-based mitigation measures.

"There is a nexus between climate change and the oceans. This situation threatens marine resources, the economy, and food security of millions of people in Peru and around the world," she expressed.

Therefore, the minister called for concrete actions to enhance the resilience of oceans and marine-coastal ecosystems.

Besides, she emphasized the need to strengthen the capacities of nearby communities, which are the most affected by changes in the ocean.
