Peru: Citizens march across the country protesting against judicial corruption

14:44 | Lima, Jul. 19.

Students, workers, and locals in cities all over Peru have taken to the streets in protest against the recent corruption scandal involving high-level judicial authorities.

Demonstrations have spread across much of the Andean nation since this morning.

They erupted in Cusco, Cajamarca, Iquitos, Arequipa, Piura, Huanuco, Moquegua, Chiclayo, Ayacucho, and Tacna, among other cities.

During the protests, participants express their rejection of corruption cases implicating judicial institutions like the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) and the Judicial Branch

Marches take place in a peaceful manner, except in north-eastern city of Iquitos, where some incidents were reported.

The aforementioned corruption scandal was made public last week with the release of wiretapping material implicating magistrates, CNM members, entrepreneurs, and politicians in influence peddling, bribery, and willful neglect of duty.
