Peru: Chan Chan sees recovery in tourism, draws over 6,400 visitors in less than a week

18:01 | Trujillo (La Libertad), Aug. 5.

The Chan Chan Archaeological Complex has become the engine that drives the tourism sector in La Libertad region. The Decentralized Culture Directorate has revealed that the site —located in the district of Huanchaco in Trujillo Province— received 6,407 visitors during the Independence Day week and on the first Sunday of August.

According to the head of the Decentralized Culture Directorate in La Libertad, John Juarez, this figure includes 955 domestic and 8 foreign visitors on July 28, 1,449 domestic and 10 foreign visitors on July 29, 975 foreign and 2 foreign visitors on July 30, as well as 31,896 people of all ages on July 31.

On Sunday, August 1, the number of visitors was 2,112, including national and foreign tourists, who enjoyed the special program of activities prepared within the framework of Open Museums —an initiative of the Ministry of Culture, which grants free admission to archaeological sites and museums administered by such sector.

This last activity included a Chimu representation at the grove of trees inside the Museum of Chan Chan, as well as the launch of the Bicitour (Bike Tour) program, which has the support of the National Geographic.

A boost to economic recovery

"The increase of visitors is encouraging because it helps revive the regional economy and disseminate the universal values of this archaeological site as Heritage of Humanity," La Libertad region's culture director pointed out.

These figures show that most visitors were Peruvian nationals, which means the domestic tourism campaign — promoted by the central government and regional authorities — is paying off and more Peruvians are choosing to discover their own country.

The head of La Libertad's Decentralized Culture Directorate affirmed that the July visitor figure at Chan Chan is very close to pre-pandemic levels, with 10,108 visitors; while in the same month of 2019, 14,408 tourists visited the place to explore the Nik An walled complex.

But, above all, the biggest surprise has to do with the numbers from previous months in 2021, when only 6,341 visitors arrived, that is, fewer tourists than the above-mentioned weekend of analysis and much fewer than the entire month of July.

Safe Travels Stamp

As is known, the Nik An walled complex within the Chan Chan Archaeological Complex and its Site Museum have received the Safe Travels Stamp —an international distinction that allows travelers to recognize that these two sites comply with health standardized protocols to prevent COVID-19.

"This is another piece of good news for Chan Chan and La Libertad region. This is a new achievement and recognized the effort of all the personnel of the Ministry of Culture, especially those who work at the Chan Chan Museum and Archaeological Complex," Juarez stated at that time.
