Peru: Better mining performance projected to boost GDP in 2020

00:00 | Lima, Jan. 9.

Privately-run BBVA Research has indicated that Peruvian mining production will show a better performance this year, which will give strong support to GDP growth.

According to Economy and Finance Ministry forecasts, Peru's economy may achieve a 4% expansion in 2020.

For its part, the Central Reserve Bank (BCR) projected the South American country's GDP will register a growth rate of 3.8% in the current year.

Likewise, the BCR predicted that mining production will continue growing —although at a slower pace.

Also, it said that mining production recovery will be mainly explained by the performance of three metals: copper, zinc, and iron.

Within this framework, it projected that zinc production will reach 1.3 million metric tons (up by 6%), while Marcona Expansion will enable iron production to rise by 29%, thus amounting to 12.8 million metric tons.

The expected mining production recovery will lead the country's economic activity to rise by 0.6 percentage points.
