The Peruvian national badminton team —represented at the VI Jamaica International 2020 tournament by Daniela Macias, Danica Nishimura, Ines Castillo, and Fernanda Saponara— won two duo-medals (one silver and one bronze) in one of the qualifying events for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The duo composed of Macias and Nishimura still have chances of getting tickets for the Summer Olympic Games, as they proved their talent in Kingston.

The national pairing accessed the grand final after eliminating the local counterpart composed of Stefani Brown and Tahlellah Townsend by a 2-0 score (21-8; 21-8). Likewise, they defeated the Czech Republic's Tereza Švábíková and Katerina Tomalova pair by 2-1 (17-21; 21-14; 21-19). Unfortunately, the Peruvians lost to Japan's Sayaka Hobara and Rena Miyaura.

The other Peruvian couple was composed of Ines Castillo and Fernanda Saponara —who debuted as such internationally— and claimed bronze medal.

Together, Castillo and Saponara defeated Jamaicans Breanna Bisnott and Aaliyah Walker in the first round by 2-0 (21-5; 21-7). In the quarterfinals, they beat Monyata Riviera and Tamisha Williams (Barbados) also by 2-0 (21-10; 21-18). However, in the semifinals, they lost to the Japanese Hobara-Miyaura.

Individuals

The individual modality was one of the most attractive in Jamaican lands, since Daniela Macias has been fighting strongly to seal her qualification for Tokyo 2020.

She advanced two stages in the tournament, thus reaching the quarterfinals, and claimed a significant amount of points in the Olympic ranking.

Macias defeated Jamaican Shezelle Terisa Mctyson and Guatemalan Diana Corleto —each match by 2-0.

The VI Jamaica International 2020 was held in Kingston on March 4-8.

Back to Peru

The four athletes and federation head coach Francisco Alvarez returned to Peru in order to continue training at the National Sports Village (Videna) focused on their next challenge: the
Peru Future Series —to be held in Lima from March 12 to 15.

Thus, the Peruvian capital will host the new qualifiers for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
