14:44 | Ayacucho (Ayacucho region), Aug. 3.
More than 4,000 blankets were given to frost-affected people in Andean Ayacucho region, mainly those in population centers at altitudes of over 3,000 meters above sea level, Ayacucho Regional Government informed Thursday.
Aid is distributed through the Civil Defense Deputy Manager's Office. Emphasis is placed on vulnerable populations —i.e. children and the elderly— affected by low temperatures.
Likewise,
humanitarian relief for the most deprived population included 1,000 fleece blankets, 250 hygiene kits, 150 mattresses, warming clothing and essentials.
Beneficiaries included children under five years old and those over 65 years of age living in High-Andean communities.
The affected population has been exposed to temperatures below 0 °C during late night and early morning hours.
The initiative is part of the regional government's 2017 Frost and Friaje (cold spell) Mitigation Plan, and is intended to reduce seasonal effects such as acute respiratory infections (ARI).
The National Emergency Operations Center (COER), in coordination with civil defense offices at provincial level, monitors areas subject to low temperatures in order to
provide humanitarian aid when necessary.
