El ministro de Cultura Salvador del Solar acudió a los distritos de Ocuviri y Vila Vila en la provincia de Lampa, región Puno, para monitorear la entrega de apoyo a las familias como modo de prevención ante las heladas.
Involvement of the Peruvian State through the 2017 Frost and Friaje (cold spell) "Antes Peru" (Peru Ahead) Mitigation Plan is multisectoral and permanent, Culture Minister Salvador del Solar affirmed on Thursday.
The initiative seeks to assist frost-prone populations in 16 regions —including 71 provinces and 242 districts— across the Inca country.
In this sense, Minister Del Solar addressed ongoing efforts in South-Andean Puno region, where a number of government officials have been personally supervising aid delivery.
"We
have been in Puno since early May […]. The last trip —
a few days ago— also served to carry on monitoring the delivery of warming kits and livestock shelters, as well as to oversee the vaccination of children and the elderly," he told RPP radio and TV news station.
"The relevant thing about Antes Peru […] is that we have been present in a multisectoral manner. Agriculture, Health, Education and Culture [portfolios] have traveled to the [affected] areas, as we did during the Coastal El Niño emergency," he pointed out.
Fighting anemia
On the other hand, the cabinet member addressed government
efforts to
reduce childhood anemia, a condition affecting nearly half of under-3-year-olds, particularly in rural areas.
"We are articulating efforts with programs of the Health and Development-Inclusion Ministries to eradicate the main cause of death, which is not the drop in temperature, but anemia," Del Solar informed.
He explained the condition, a result of poverty, is a "structural issue we need to solve not only by delivering aid […], but also with structural policies with medium- and long-term impacts. And we are working [on this] with corresponding sectors."
