Peru: Tense calm is felt in Puno after vandalism acts

A tense calm is experienced in the city of Puno on Tuesday morning after the acts of vandalism registered last night, following clashes which left 17 people dead and more than 50 injured.

Groups of vandals attacked, looted, and set a supermarket on fire.

There were also attacks against a shopping arcade, as well as against the Public Ministry venues, the customs agency warehouse, and the Telefonica company office.

The attacks occurred after clashes between protesters and law enforcement agents were registered when the former tried to take over the Inca Manco Capac Airport in the city of Juliaca.

Said violence left 17 citizens dead and more than 50 injured, who are being treated at Carlos Monge Hospital in Juliaca.

Within this framework, health authorities report lack of medicines and blood units to treat the wounded citizens, as well as food for the relatives of the injured, a TVPeru Noticias correspondent reported.

In the city of Ilave, acts of violence were also reported, such as the burning of the home that belongs to Congressman Jorge Luis Flores Ancachi, who stated that his mother-in-law used to live there with her two pets.
