Peru: Armed Forces seize weapons and materials from terrorist group Shining Path

The Ministry of Defense on Monday reported that weapons, ammunition, various tools, and food items were seized from the terrorist organization Shining Path during a territorial control operation in Monte Brown Populated Center located in Vilcabamba district of Cusco region.

The operation was carried out on January 15, 16, and 17 in Chancaveni —an area annexed to Vilcabamba— by the personnel of the Eastern Operational Command-VRAEM.

The war material included two M1 carbines manufactured in the U.S., two 15-round M1 carbine magazines, and 30mm (23 rounds) ammunition.

The seizure also included 9mm Parabellum (25 rounds) ammunition, 9mm short barrel ammunition (9 rounds), 7.62x45mm (15 rounds) ammunition, and a hand grenade.

Among the tools and clothing items were a chainsaw, a small generator for booby traps, a printer, a binocular, 2 banners with Shining Path's symbol (a hammer and sickle logo), as well as various materials and food.

The Armed Forces continue efforts to combat terrorism-related activities in areas where a state of emergency has been declared, as well as preventive measures to control the COVID-19 pandemic.
