APM Terminals Callao (APMTC), the concessionaire of Callao port's Muelle Norte terminal, informed it has invested US$70 million in a new unloading system to supply the recently upgraded 25,000-ton-capacity storage.
The system includes two underground conveyor belts that carry the load in bulk using two movable cranes and two mega dump bodies, the only ones in Peru.
“This new infrastructure and equipment is helping us improve the performance and results of the load at of Callao port's Muelle Norte terminal. For instance, we managed to double the performance of our operations on March 8 compared to previous traditional unloading operations,” Head of APM Terminals General Cargo Operations Matthe Rantanen said.
On the other hand, recent upgrade works at Muelle 11 and Muelle 5 have reduced waiting time of bulk carriers in the bay by up to 83%, comparing the bulk vessels received in January-February 2016 with those received in the same months last year, when this new capacity was not reached.
The two piers have been enlarged and refurbished as part of the upgrading works included under stages 1 and 2 of the concession contract of Muelle Norte terminal, the executive commented.
It is important to note that the new infrastructure will enable APM Terminals Callao to receive bigger vessels in a cost and time efficient way, which will result in reduced costs for vessels and land logistics process.
APM Terminals Callao has increased load operations at the port in a gradual and significant manner as a result of such investment.
