Defense Minister Carlos Diaz on Friday stated that Peru's participation in Antarctica has positioned the country as a serious, responsible, and capable actor, while highlighting the high operational level demonstrated by the Armed Forces in one of the planet's most demanding environments.

"In that extreme environment, Peru's Armed Forces have demonstrated their high level of operational readiness, professional strength, and capacity to sustain complex operations with precision and efficiency," Diaz emphasized during the arrival ceremony of the B.A.P. Carrasco vessel at Callao Naval Base.

The minister also underscored that the Defense sector is promoting the strengthening of the Armed Forces, “with the conviction that they underpin Peru's strategic projection, its development, and its presence in areas of international interest.”

The B.A.P. Carrasco arrived in Callao region this morning after completing Peru's 32nd Scientific Campaign in Antarctica (ANTAR XXXII).

The ceremony was led by President of the Republic, Jose Balcazar. It attended by the Peruvian Navy general commander and other authorities.

The ANTAR XXXII campaign lasted 98 days, including 51 days in Antarctica, during which 26 scientific research projects were carried out in areas such as oceanography, geology, biology, and environmental studies.

Logistical tasks were carried out at the Machu Picchu Scientific Station, along with cooperation efforts with allied countries.

In that regard, the minister recognized the efforts of the 115 expedition members who took part in this mission.

"This arrival is not just the end of a journey, but the expression of a country that conducts research and contributes to global knowledge," he stated.

Moment of silence

During his remarks, Minister Diaz opened with a tribute to Petty Officer First Class Jaime David Nieto Rojas, who recently died in the line of duty.

"His dedication and vocation for service stand as a testament to the commitment that characterizes the men and women of our Armed Forces," he stated, after calling for a minute of silence in his memory.
