The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) on Monday announced the beginning of the first round of negotiations for a Trade Agreement between Peru and Indonesia.

This round takes place in hybrid format in Lima until May 30.

"Peru exports a significant number of agricultural products to Indonesia, such as cacao beans, grapes, and fresh pomegranates," Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Elizabeth Galdo indicated.

"As our country is one of the world's leading fruit exporters, this trade agreement will create new opportunities for Indonesian consumers to have access to high-quality Peruvian products," she stated.

The Cabinet member underscored that this negotiation is an invaluable opportunity to develop a framework that establishes better conditions for access to markets, trade barriers reduction, as well as the creation of new opportunities for citizens and companies.

Initial session

The initial session was chaired by Minister Galdo; Indonesian Ambassador to Peru, Ricky Suhendar; Peruvian Chief Negotiator, Gerardo Meza; and Indonesian Chief Negotiator, Johni Marta.

In this round, negotiations involve issues, such as Market Access; Cooperation; Legal and Institutional Issues; Rules of Origin; Technical Obstacles to Trade; Customs Procedures and Trade Facilitation; Trade Defense; as well as Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures.

Bilateral trade

Indonesia is a market hosting more than 276 million inhabitants. It is the world's fourth-most populous country and the largest economy in Southeast Asia.

Similarly, it is the fifth-most important economy in Asia and the ninth-most relevant economy for Peru's trade in that region.

In 2023, Peruvian exports growth to Indonesia was possible mainly due to greater sales of natural dyes (+102.9%), pharmaceutical products (+39%), and fish meal (+33%).

In addition, Peru currently supplies Indonesia with minerals. In 2023, greater exports of zinc (+143.2%) and iron (US$785 million) stood out.
