The Executive Directorate at Chimbote Regional Hospital "Eleazar Guzman Barron" on Monday alerted that no beds are available for patients who may need intensive care unit admission because of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The hospital —which is a reference center for COVID-19 patients in the coastal area of Ancash region— has 12 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds in total, nine of them are occupied and another three are not operational.

On the second floor, eight emergency beds have been set up for COVID-19 patients who do not require ICU care but supplemental oxygen at rates above 15 liters.

Meanwhile, 42 coronavirus patients are hospitalized at the COVID-19 Temporary Module, six of them in emergency beds.

The Executive Directorate is holding talks with three physicians specializing in intensive care and emergency care so that they can join and strengthen the Intensive Care Unit.

According to the hospital, only moderate to severe symptomatic patients are being treated for now. Therefore, it encouraged the population to attend health posts and centers in their communities to avoid patient overcrowding at hospitals.

Additionally, due to the increase in cases and hospitalizations, it urged citizens to strictly comply with the health protocols: hand washing, social distancing, and use of face masks.
