The Judiciary on Wednesday stated that the advance sentencing of former President Alejandro Toledo and others in the Southern Interoceanic Highway case will be made public on October 21, after hearing the defendants' arguments, thus concluding the trial.

The verdict will be read on Monday at 2:00 p.m. (local time), the Judicial Branch announced on the X platform.

The Second National Collegiate Criminal Court —presided over by Judge Zaida Perez— indicated that the verdict will be delivered at the courtroom of Barbadillo Prison, in Lima's Ate district, where Alejandro Toledo is serving preventive detention.

During the hearing, Toledo gave his final words prior to the announcement of the verdict.

"From the bottom of my heart, I still do not understand why I am involved in this," the former president said in his opening remarks.

"I ask you to please do justice (…) I want to tell you that I am innocent; I never made any arrangement with (Odebrecht's former representative in Peru, Jorge) Barata or with Mr. Josef Maiman (…) Whatever decision you (judges) will make, I have a complicated health condition," Toledo added.

"I have cancer, heart problems, and will turn 80 in a few months. If this is going to continue, the only thing I ask, is please let me defend myself from home (...) Please, let me recover or die at home," he concluded.
