Peru: Agriculture must be improved without clearing more hectares of forest

19:07 | San Francisco (U.S.), Sep. 14.

Minister of Environment Fabiola Muñoz affirmed Peru's agriculture-dependent population will ensure an adequate connection between sustainable production and climate change by making responsible use, as well as proper management of water and land.

The official stressed the need to enhance said economic activity, "but improvement will not occur by removing more hectares of rainforest," she warned.

Speaking at the forum "Unlocking Climate Action: Sustainable and Resilient Supply Chains," held Thursday as part of the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, the minister indicated there is a large number of people working in the agriculture sector.

"People work on the field and can connect sustainable production with climate change by providing a more effective use of water and land," she affirmed.

For this reason, efforts are being made to improve non-timber forest products, which are really good to feed the population or for Peruvian cooks who use the new products.

While undertaking an analysis of the situation, Muñoz noted the average amount of timber extracted from Peru chestnut concessions is one tree per hectare of forest.

"Small-scale producers cannot achieve real development or resolve their problems with one tree. We can improve that, plus we are holding talks with producers," she added.

According to the government official, the proposed measures are intended to provide farmers with 40 trees per hectare.
