OECD Secretary-General's visit shows support for Peru as reliable partner

14:28 | Lima, Sep. 25.

Foreign Affairs Minister Ana Cecilia Gervasi reported that the Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Mathias Cormann, will arrive in Peru on Tuesday, noting that his visit shows the support for Peru as a reliable partner.

"The visit of the OECD Secretary-General, Mathias Cormann, to our country, which will take place between September 26 and 28, is of the greatest relevance and significance because it reflects the support of the organization and its member countries for Peru's accession process," she said in statements to Andina new agency.

Referring to its relationship with the OECD, the government official highlighted that Peru has proven to be a reliable partner as it shares its values and has taken care to disseminate them across the region.

Within this framework, the Cabinet member affirmed that Peru promoted the creation of the Regional Program for Latin America and the Caribbean, which it co-chaired with Chile since its establishment.

During his stay in Peru, the OECD Secretary-General will be accompanied by a delegation with which he will present the Economic Survey of Peru —conducted by the organization— and will provide an overall assessment of Peru's progress in its accession process.

As part of his agenda, Cormann will also participate in official events with the Peruvian State's highest authorities, and will hold meetings with unions, business associations, and representatives of academy.

"The visit of the OECD's highest authority will be an opportunity to inform citizens of the opportunities and challenges of the accession process, which is beneficial in itself," Minister Gervasi remarked.

Progress in the accession process

The Foreign Affairs sector's head affirmed that Peru is moving firmly towards the OECD, as evidenced by the delivery of the Initial Memorandum, which took place on June 7.

Said document, she explained, consolidates the self-assessment of the alignment of Peru’s regulatory framework, policies and practices with OECD legal instruments.
