19:02 | Washington D.C. (U.S.), Nov. 11.

The Organization of American States (OAS) on Wednesday afternoon released a statement about the current political situation in Peru.

In the release, the OAS General Secretariat reiterated its deep concern over the new political crisis in Peru five months ahead of elections.

"In this complex situation, political actors are responsible for ensuring democratic functioning for the good of the country, as well as for guaranteeing the holding of the national elections called for April 11, 2021," the General Secretariat said.

As stated in the document, the holding of these elections constitutes an essential step to ensure a new stage in the institutional democratic life of Peru.

In this regard, the Organization of American States has ensured the presence of an Electoral Observation Mission.

"In this new case, the GS/OAS reiterates it is the responsibility of the Constitutional Court of Peru to rule on the legality and legitimacy of the institutional decisions adopted, as well as on the differences in the interpretation of the Constitution, in accordance with the actions and arguments presented to it by political actors," the statement reads.

Moreover, the OAS noted that it is the political responsibility of the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (GS/OAS) to ensure compliance with the effective exercise of representative democracy as the basis of the rule of law and constitutional regimes.
