The Peruvian-born actress Magaly Solier, who plays the main character in the Golden Bear winner “The Milk of Sorrow”, was honored on Saturday as illustrious daughter of her native Huanta (Ayacucho), in the south Andes of Peru.
The decoration ceremony was in charge of the mayor Edwin Bustios Saavedra and the board of aldermen.
Provincial authorities prepared a magnificent reception to welcome the Peruvian actress.
The central ceremony was held around 9:40 hours (14:40 GMT) in the municipal Hall "Recaredo Perez Palma Valdivia".
During a council meeting held on February 26, Huanta aldermen agreed unanimously to honor the actress as illustrious daughter of the province.
The request was made orally by the mayor. "We must honor our compatriot Magaly Solier as illustrious daughter of Huanta for giving the country and Esmeralda de los Andes School international prestige", stated the municipal authority.
The Peruvian film “The Milk of Sorrow" (or La Teta Asustada in Spanish) won the top Golden Bear award at Berlin International Film Festival, one of the world's leading film festivals.
Magaly Solier was born in Huanta in 1986. One day while she was selling puka caliente - a typical dish of Ayacucho - in the town’s main square, Solier was discovered by Peruvian filmmaker Claudia Llosa, director of the awarded film.
