Lima 2019 torch relay to light athletes' passion

14:31 | Lima, Mar. 25.

The Pan American torch relay will last 22 days (from July 5 to 26). The trip will start at the ruins of Teotihuacan in Mexico and will arrive in Peru's greatest tourist attraction and Wonder of the Modern World, Machu Picchu.

Once in the Inca citadel, the torch will start a journey through 19 main cities and localities across Peru (5,500 km in total) before arriving at the capital city's National Stadium for the Games' Opening Ceremony.

For this production, Lima 2019 is counting on a team of specialists who participated in the relays of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016.

Ingrid Cano and Paola Burke, the head of route and project, respectively, have already started reconnaissance trips of what will be the route of the Pan American Torch.

The participation of regional governments will be fundamental. They are already preparing their cities for the arrival of the Torch.

In addition, they will be sponsoring the celebrations as custodians of the flame, promoting the local culture, portraying dances, typical dresses, traditional food, arts and more.

They will also hold celebrations along the route of the Pan American Torch, and recruit local men and women to be torchbearers. The guidelines will be published by Lima 2019.

Meanwhile, the relay of the Para-Pan American Torch will last 3 days (from August 21 to 23), traveling through 12 huacas in Lima. It will be lit virtually —via a hashtag— with the participation of people across Peru and the world.
