As part of the measures to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection during year-end celebrations in Peru, the Government has made official the ban on private vehicles for December 24, 25, 31 (2020) and January 1 (2021), by means of a regulation published in El Peruano official gazette.

The rule provides that the non-worked hours of December 24 shall be compensated within the next 10 days, or when established by the head of each public entity, in accordance with its specific needs.

According to the document, the head of each public entity shall adopt the necessary measures to guarantee the provision of services that are essential for society on said non-working day.

In addition, private companies may invoke this provision, following agreement between the employer and employees, who shall establish the way in which the non-worked hours will be compensated. The employer will be able to decide in the absence of agreement.

Private sector's entities and companies, whose services are needed in the community, are allowed to determine which jobs are excluded from this provision, in order to guarantee said services.

The essential services include health care, cleaning and sanitation, electricity, water, sewage, gas and fuel, burials, communications and telecommunications, transportation, ports, airports, security, guard, surveillance, carriage of valuables, as well as sale of food and supplies.

The supreme decree was signed by Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti, Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez, and ministers of the following sectors: Interior, Defense, Foreign Affairs, Health, Justice, Women, Transport and Communications, Production, Environment, Culture, Economy and Finance, Housing, Construction and Sanitation, Education, and Labor.
