Peruvian Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Wednesday afternoon announced that Thursday, December 24, will be a compensatory non-working day so that there is no need to go to work and everyone can stay home waiting for Christmas.

Additionally, the Cabinet chief affirmed that New Year's Eve has not been considered this time since a previous rule had already declared December 31 a compensatory non-working day, while January 1 is a holiday.

The high-ranking official reported that the Government has imposed a ban on the use of private vehicles on December 24, 25, and 31, as well as on January 1, in order to avoid family gatherings and combat the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country.

Bermudez encouraged Peruvians to avoid meeting with relatives who do not live in the same household and find creative ways to stay connected without being physically together, thus reducing the risk of infection.

"The Council of Ministers has reiterated that, for these year-end celebrations, it is essential to adopt behavior and family relationship patterns different from the traditional ones, because it is advisable not to visit or meet with relatives who do not live in the same household," she said.

"With this restriction (the ban on private vehicles), we want to pass on the message that spending time with one's family is important, but we have to find creative ways to do so, without the physical contact that we usually use," she added.

By implementing this ban, citizens will not be able to use their vehicles on these four days, which takes away the possibility to go from one zone to another and, with it, the chances to attend family gatherings.
