Italy's Serie A Benevento Calcio striker Gianluca Lapadula was drafted by the Peruvian Soccer Federation to face Chile and Argentina, on November 13 and 17, at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Qualifiers, coach Ricardo Gareca announced on Friday.

This announcement came at a proper time for the team, as its main striker Paolo Guerrero is injured and off the courts thru April 2021.

The Benevento attacker is not unknown to Gareca. Four years ago, the coach traveled to Italy to watch him play. However, at the time, Lapadula showed no interest in joining the South American country's squad, as he was going through a great moment in Italy. Given his performances and goals, he was transferred from Pescara (Serie B) to AC Milan (Serie A).

Among the other important announcements are those of defender Jean Pierre Rhyner and goalkeeper Renato Solis, who will be joining the squad too.

Nonetheless, forward Jefferson Farfan —who has not been able to recover from a knee problem— will not be included in the team this time. Thus, he will miss the matches against Chile and Argentina.

On November 2, training sessions will kick off featuring players from the domestic league, while the rest of athletes will be joining the delegation gradually.

Peru holds the eighth spot in the South American Qualifiers ranking. It saw a tie versus Paraguay (2-2) in Asuncion and lost to Brazil (2-4) in Lima.
