Huanuco region cacao among Peru's seven best

09:07 | Huanuco (Huanuco region), Mar. 5.

The Cacao of Excellence (CoEx) Programme has chosen Huanuco's cacao —from the Cacao Alto Huallaga Agro-Industrial Cooperative— as one of the seven best in Peru and is a finalist to participate in the International Cocoa Awards (ICA).

Through the Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry's (Minagri) Agricultural Directorate General (DGA), a total of 157 samples from diverse regions of the Inca country were thoroughly assessed by the CoEx Porgramme Cacao Tasters.

Cacao Alto Huallaga Agro-Industrial Cooperative's bean will be evaluated again by the CoEx Technical Committee which will announce the winners of the ICA at the Salon du Chocolat starting this October in Paris (France).

"This is a joy. We feel motivated to keep working for more," the Cooperative Head Carlos Gomez expressed.

International Cocoa Awards (ICA) is a global competition recognizing the work of cacao farmers and celebrating the diversity of cacao flavors.

The cooperative currently has over 400 partners and more than 1,300 ha of crops.

"Thanks to the field training, we have improved cacao's value chain," Gomez said.

It should be noted the organization also produces 50%, 70%, and 100% cacao chocolates

In 2018, 1.8 tons of chocolate were exported to Italy, Belgium, and France which amounted to US$4.655 million.
