Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Roberto Sanchez on Thursday projected that Peruvian exports may surpass US$64 billion in the current year.

The Cabinet member reiterated that Peruvian exports achieved a record figure of US$56.241 billion in 2021 —an amount higher by 34.9% over 2020.

Likewise, the government official stressed the fact that Peru has higher growth rates than the rest of Latin America and the world, as well as a trade surplus of US$9.803 billion.

In 2021, the number of exporters reached 8,573 —of which 68% were micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), producer associations, and cooperatives.

It must be noted that Peruvian products reached 170 foreign markets. Within this framework, the main destinations were China (33% of the total), the United States (13%), the European Union (12%), South Korea (5%), and Canada (5%).

In 2021, all productive sectors registered positive figures in terms of exports. Such was the case of the metallurgical (75.9%), steel (74.7%), textile (68.4%), jewelry (64.3%), fishing (34.7%), mining (33.5%), glass (32%), forestry (30.8%), chemical (29.4%), and agro-export (18%) sectors.

Agricultural exports —traditional and non-traditional ones— reached US$8.874 billion in 2021, setting a new record. The main exported products were blueberries (22%), grapes (21.6%), avocados (39.7%), mangoes (11%), cacao, its derivatives (10.2%), and asparagus (3.5%).

Peru is close to being included in the ranking of the world's top 10 fruit exporters.

Moreover, exports from Peru's domestic regions reached a record figure (US$40.804 billion), thus expanding 31% in 2021.

In this sense, 20 Peruvian regions experienced exports-related growth: Madre de Dios (107%), Ucayali (97%), Huancavelica (61%), Puno (59%), Ica (52%), Apurimac (46%), Loreto (46%), Arequipa (44%), San Martin (34%), Tacna (31%), Cusco (28%), Lambayeque (27%), Moquegua (23%), Ayacucho (20%), Ancash (19%), La Libertad (19%), Piura (18%), Tumbes (15%) Amazonas (11%), and Junin (1%).
