Foreign Affairs Minister Mario Lopez affirmed that Peru has secured access to a percentage of the doses of the vaccine being developed by Johnson & Johnson in order to combat the pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

"The official global announcement that Peru is joining the Johnson & Johnson vaccine project has secured a significant percentage of the doses for the country," he said in remarks to RPP radio and TV station.

According to the government official, the fact that clinical trials are being conducted in Peru proves that the country is going to get the vaccines and they will come early next year.

"I would like you to have the complete certainty that we are ensuring the number of vaccine doses that we need, so as to cover 70% of the population at first and up to 92% as the final goal," he explained.

Mr. Lopez noted that in recent weeks the Executive Branch had highly developed negotiations —at the bilateral level— with both laboratories and governments.

For more than a month, Johnson & Johnson has been evaluating potential venues for its trial, considering criteria such as the epidemiological profiles of countries, the conditions of their research infrastructure and the regulatory approval process.

By engaging in coordination with the company, Peru complied with the established requirements, proving its commitment to contributing to a solution to the pandemic.
