Empty streets in Lima after Peruvians are placed in mandatory social isolation (Gallery)

11:36 | Lima, Mar. 17.

Different streets and avenues in the Peruvian capital Lima stand empty as the South American nation enters its second day under a state of national emergency, decreed by the Government to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), whose confirmed cases have risen to 117.

Avenues like Arequipa, Javier Prado, and Paseo de la República Expressway look different compared to a normal day, as there are very few private transport units and public transport buses.

This is occurring after President Martin Vizcarra —on Sunday— declared a state of national emergency for a period of 15 days to prevent the spread of COVID-19, which implies mandatory social isolation.

National Police Commander General Jose Luis Lavalle explained that law enforcement officials control the compliance of the measures set by the Government because the aim is the common good, that is, working for the good of all.

Security fences have been installed on some avenues so that the police can monitor those who are authorized or need to be away.
