10:39 | Lima, Oct. 14 (ANDINA).
The long-awaited Depeche Mode's Tour of the Universe electrified over 30,000 exhilarated Peruvian fans gathered at the Monumental Stadium in Lima last night. The British electronic band proved to be one of the world's biggest ever acts and their concert reinforced that legendary status.
It was 9:21 pm ( 02:21 GMT) when the band appeared on the stage led by singer Dave Gahan alongside with guitarist Martin Gore and keyboardist Andrew Fletcher, who started the show with In Chains.
Dave looked and sounded healthy, spinning and dancing with the mic stand several times. He looked triumphant, holding the microphone out to the crowd, which sang the choruses of great hits such as Wrong, Hole to Feed, Walking in My Shoes, Precious and You’ll stumble in my Footsteps.
The early part of the set in particular was dominated by songs from their twelfth full-length album "Sounds of the Universe."
The enchanted multitude also enjoyed Martin's hearty background vocals on Home and Miles Away/The Truth Is, also included in the band's Sounds of The Universe.
Of course, Enjoy The Silence, Policy Of Truth, I Feel You, Never Let Me Down Again, and Personal Jesus also warmed Lima's cold night.
After almost two hours on stage, the band said goodbye twice, before coming back to sing Somebody, Stripped and Behind The Wheel.
The concert was closed with a duet by Martin and Dave singing Waiting For The Night, included in its album “Violator”.
Before the lights turned down, Dave, Martin and Andrew shouted "Thanks Peru. See you next time" to their Peruvian screamy fans.
Tour of the Universe is Depeche Mode's first-ever stadium tour that includes shows in 21 countries across Europe, North and South America.
The band plays tomorrow October 15th in Santiago, Chile at the Club Hipico and on Saturday, October 17th in Buenos Aires, Argentina at the Club Ciudad, before leaving for Germany, where they perform on Saturday, October 31st in Oberhausen at the Kopi Arena.
Closing in on its 30th year together, Depeche Mode, the greatest new wave band of all time, still is releasing new music strong enough to compete with its old favorites.
The trio's "Violator" hit the streets in 1990, bringing them into the mainstream with Personal Jesus and Enjoy the Silence.
The British electronic band continued to release albums with success, and have amassed over 12 studio albums, three live albums, 8 compilations, 49 singles, 10 video albums and 56 music videos.
Depeche Mode has impacted a number of groups after them, including heavy metal groups such as Fear Factory, Marilyn Manson, Tori Amos and Johnny Cash. Most recently, Enjoy the Silence was covered by Coldplay as an alternate video for Viva la Vida.
