Peruvian Defense Minister Nuria Esparch on Tuesday supervised the start of the immunization of Armed Forces personnel against COVID-19, with the batch of the first 17,550 doses delivered to the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The first vaccination center visited by the Cabinet member was the Marine Infantry Base located in Lima's Ancon district.

Joined by the General Commander of the Navy, Admiral Ricardo Menendez, the minister supervised the inoculation of naval personnel.

Afterwards, the high-ranking official visited Las Palmas Air Base in Surco district, where she verified the process accompanied by Health Minister Oscar Ugarte and the
General Commander of the Air Force, Air General Rodolfo Pereyra.

The third vaccination point supervised was the Army Command Battalion No. 19 base, located in Chorrillos district, where she was welcomed by Army General Commander Manuel Gomez de La Torre.

Of the 17,550 vaccines distributed to the Armed Forces, these have been delivered to the Army (7,020), Navy (7,602), and Air Force (2,928).

"With this batch, we start to protect the more than 17,000 troops, in addition to the 3,000 health professionals of the Armed Forces, who have already been vaccinated. As the rest of the already-committed vaccines arrive in the country, the vaccination process of our Armed Forces will continue," she expressed.

Among the military personnel that have begun to be vaccinated in this first stage —which will last until March 10— are COVID Patrol members, Voluntary Military Service personnel, non-commissioned officers, and technicians —all of them are on the frontline in the fight against the pandemic.
