Peru's Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos has reported that the relaxation of
the border closure will enable flights with other countries, thus allowing Peruvian and foreign nationals to return to their places of origin.
The official said the Supreme Decree No. 045-2020-PCM —published Wednesday— was enacted in response to the requests from governments of other countries seeking permission to land airplanes in Peruvian territory in a bid to pick up their citizens.
Also, he reported that Peruvian consulates overseas have been exceeded by the demands. Therefore, they are being strengthened so that they can assist the affected communities as much as possible.
In this case, Zeballos urged citizens to understand the scale of the current problem: "The decision-making is not only the Government's responsibility, it is the responsibility of all citizens."
"As a Government, we have to extend the message of calm and great caution. Maybe, our best intentions will be overflown, and we will not able to meet all the demands, which is why we call for calm and commitment," the cabinet chief expressed.
